What to do when Notepad++ would crash?

You can report crash issue on Help forum. Before posting your crash report, please do the following diagnostics. They have helped.

  1. Remove all plugins (located in plugins directory under your Notepad++ installation directory). Or move them to some (sub)folder.
  2. Relaunch Notepad++, and try to reproduce the crash.
  3. If crash is still reproducible, then download the zip package of the latest release, unzip Unicode directory into a clean directory.
Relaunch Notepad++, and try to reproduce the crash.
    • If you can still reproduce the crash, then post your report on Help forum, with the following info :
      • Your Notepad++ version / mode (ANSI or Unicode)
      • Your OS info (version and language)
      • The procedure to reproduce crash.
    • Try attaching the mini-dump file, if any has been generated (v5.1+).
  4. If the crash issue disappears after 1. and 2., the crash comes from one of installed plugins:
    • Move back the plugins one by one to identify the one which causes crash.
    • Once the guilty one is found, please post your report on Plugin Development forum, with the following info :
      • Your Notepad++ version / mode (ANSI or Unicode)
      • Your OS info (version and language)
      • The name and the version of the plugin which makes Notepad++ crash
      • The procedure to reproduce crash.
    • Please keep in mind that plugin developers are independent of Notepad++, and they may not have the same amount of availability or priority list as the main Notepad++ developers.

A final note: if Notepad++ freezes or otherwise hangs, it will not produce a .dmp file. However, you can use the ProcDump tool found at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/dd996900.asp to force the generation of such a file, which will be just as valuable as if Notepad++ had generated it on its own. Of course, this is basically a developer tool, but it is reasonably straightforward to use.
